Carso Awards in Health, Nutrition and Environment

2009 Edition

Objective and Description of Awards

The purpose of the Carso Health Awards is to thrust the development of the human capital towards the welfare of the Latin American and Caribbean Region by stimulating professional growth of leaders in the fields of health, nutrition and the environment towards research, innovation and development aimed at promoting the wellbeing of the population in the region.

The Carso Health Awards are granted yearly in three categories:

PREMIO CARSO for Life Achievement in Research

This award honors those individuals who, after devoting their professional lives to research in the fields of health, nutrition or the environment, have irrefutably contributed to the development of the health sciences and have promoted leadership of the Latin America region in these areas.

PREMIO CARSO for Technological Innovation

This award is aimed at acknowledging front-line people or institutions whose promotion of innovative applications in communications technology has contributed to bringing health and its benefits closer to the population of Latin America.

PREMIO CARSO for Outstanding Institution

This award pays tribute to those programs of non-for profit organizations whose contribution within the Latin American Region, whether academic or in the field, represents new and better health, nutrition and environmental alternatives for the population in the region.

Sum of Awards
In addition to awarding the Premios Carso statuette, an economic incentive of 100,000 US dollars is granted to each category in recognition of achievement.

Nominations
Nominations without exception must be electronically submitted by third parties of good standing and within the timeframe of this open call.


Bases of the 2009 Open Call

  1. Nominees must be native or permanent residents of one of the countries of the Latin American and Caribbean region.

  2. Nominations must be submitted by a third party and not by the candidate in question.

  3. The PREMIOS CARSO are granted according to merit irrespective of race, gender, religion or political affiliation.

  4. A person or an institution can only be nominated to one and only category.

  5. No posthumous nominations or any other format different to those set forth herein shall be accepted.

  6. Nominations must contain detailed and verifiable information to justify the nomination with regards to career background, research and/or projects carried out and their impact in the region.

  7. Nominations shall be submitted in English or Spanish only.

  8. All nominations must be submitted in the corresponding form of the category of interest. The forms per category are available at www.salud.carso.org in the Open Calls section.

  9. All nomination formats are online and cannot be saved. Therefore we kindly suggest that you gather all documents prior to filling the formats and make sure that you have all the information requested in the format. For that purpose you can print a sample format ( nomination form sample),as once you send your nomination the system will not allow additional information or documentation to be sent.

  10. Once the nomination has been sent, the Head of Social Investment will be sending a reply within 7 working days

  11. When submitting the nomination, nominators shall ensure that in the event their nominees are granted the award, nominees accept the award as well as the compromise of presenting a lecture in support of the Carso Health Institute’s institutional strengthening activities.

  12. Nominations will be received as of Tuesday September 9, 2008 to January 16, 2009 at 14.30 hours (Mexico City time). No nominations will be received after this deadline.

  13. In addition to the general bases above, the specific requirements for each category are detailed below.


    1. Category 1. PREMIO CARSO for Life Achievement in Research
    2. The PREMIO CARSO for Life Achievement in Research aims at generating a stronger relation between research and generation of solution to the problems that Latin American populations face. In this sense, the nomination and the attached documentation must offer sufficient information to allow assessment of the nominee through the following elements:

      In all cases nominees shall fulfill the following minimum requirements:

      1. Minimum 15 years of verifiable professional experience in the fields of health, nutrition and the environment (defined as healthy environments).
      2. Have a collection of publications based on high quality and international scope levels as well as journal index of impact.
      3. Present verifiable examples regarding the way in which research activities have benefited the population.
      4. All of the above must be supported with the following documentation:
        • Nomination form for the corresponding category. These forms are available at www.salud.carso.org.
        • Extended resume including the list of publications by the nominee in pdf and entitled as follows: Nominee’s last name followed by the word “CV” (Example: Gomez_CV)
        • Pdf copy of nationality or residency evidential document of nominee entitled: last name followed by the word “passport” (Example: Gomez_Passort)
        • Letters of support from three referees. Referees are established authorities in the field who have not collaborated with the nominee within five years of the nomination, who are not affiliated with the nominee's institution and who do not have a personal relationship with the nominee. Letters of support, duly dated and signed, must include the referee's name, position, affiliation, e-mail address and telephone number as well as the nominee's name and the period of time and capacity in which the referee has known the nominee. These letters should offer an overall assessment of the nominee's accomplishments, including examples of how these achievements fulfill the evaluation criteria outlined below. Referees should not send their letters directly but rather back to the person making the nomination. The letters must be submitted in a pdf scanned copy as individual letters entitled: Nominee’s last name followed by the word “letter” and the number of the letter (Example: Gomez_letter1).
        • Brief bio of nominator in pdf format entitled as follows: Nominee’s last name followed by the word “cvnom” (Example: Gómez_CVnom)

    3. Category 2. PREMIO CARSO for Technological Innovation
    4. The PREMIO CARSO for Technological Innovation honors those individuals and institutions that have developed innovative applications using communications technology to make health solutions more accessible to the population in the region. The purpose of this award is to strengthen the relationship between technology and generation of solutions to the problems faced by Latin America. The growing awareness of the value of participation by patients and citizens in health matters is the driving force of innovation in this area. Information and communication technologies help organizations attain the commitment and participation of patients and citizens.

      In this sense, the nomination and the documentation attached must offer sufficient information to assess the nomination through the following elements:

      • Detailed description of application, experience of implementation of this application and specific examples as to how it has benefited the population.
      • Documentary proof of proprietary rights or rights of use of the innovation in the corresponding application.
      • Resume of the proprietor and person or persons responsible for the development of the innovation.
      • Copy of nationality or residence evidential documents of candidate in pdf format and entitled: last name followed by the word “passport” (Example: Gomez_Passport)
      • Copy of the deed of incorporation in pdf format and entitled as follows: Acronym of the institution followed by the word “acta” (Example: ICS­_acta)
      • Letters of support from three referees. Referees are established authorities in the field who have not collaborated with the nominee within five years of the nomination, who are not affiliated with the nominee's institution and who do not have a personal relationship with the nominee.     5. Category 3. PREMIO CARSO for Outstanding Institution
    6. The purpose of the PREMIO CARSO for Outstanding Institution is to acknowledge successful programs that have improved the health of the populations in the region. This acknowledgement seeks to promote the implementation, replication and dissemination of successful programs in favor of the Latin American populations.

      In this sense, the nominated institutions must have verifiable experiences of the success of the program according to the following elements:

      1. Experience of at least 10 years in the fields of health, nutrition and the environment (this last one in healthy environments).
      2. Be a non-for-profit institution incorporated at any of the Latin American and Caribbean countries
      3. Hold specific cases on how their work or the program in question has benefited the population.
      4. The above has to be supported with the following documents:
        • Copy of the deed of incorporation in pdf format and entitled as follows: Acronym of the institution followed by the word “acta” (Example: ICS­_acta).
        • Extended resume of the institution in pdf entitled as followed: Acronym of the institution followed by the word “CV” (Example: ICS_CV)
        • Letters of support from three referees. Referees are established authorities in the field who have not collaborated with the nominee within five years of the nomination, who are not affiliated with the nominated institution. Letters of support, duly dated and signed, must include the referee's name, position, affiliation, e-mail address and telephone number as well as the nominee's name and the period of time and capacity in which the referee has known the nominee. These letters should offer an overall assessment of the nominee's accomplishments, including examples of how these achievements fulfill the evaluation criteria outlined below. Referees should not send their letters directly but rather back to the person making the nomination. The letters must be submitted in a pdf scanned copy as individual letters entitled: Nominee’s last name followed by the word “letter” and the number of the letter (Example: Gomez_letter1).
        • Executive resume of nominator in pdf format entitled as follows: Nominee’s last name followed by the word “cvnom” (Example: Gómez_CVnom).


  14. An ad-hoc jury who might request at discretion the support of third party experts shall be responsible for the assessment of the nominations and the final selection of the award winners.
  15. The jury might declare the open call deserted in the event that no nominations are received in conformity with the requirements and objectives of the Carso Awards in Health, Nutrition and the Environment.
  16. Decisions by the jury are inappealable.

Submission of Applications

Nominations will be received at premios@salud.carso.org starting Tuesday September 9, 2008 and concluding on Friday January 16, 2009 at 14.30 hours.

Publication of Results

Results will be disclosed on February 16, 2009 in the Carso Health Institute website. Award winners will be notified by e-mail the same day.

Carso Awards Winners Presentation

The presentation of the 2009 Edition of the Carso Awards in Health, Nutrition and the Environment will be held on March 30, 2009, in Mexico City.
