Carso Health Institute

The Carso Health Institute is a non-for-profit organization that mobilizes private resources to finance projects of social interest in the areas of health, nutrition and the environment.

The aim of the Institute is to contribute to the solution of the health problems that affect the Latin American region through the identification and prioritization of the problems; the design of  initiatives and mechanisms to address them; the identification of  partners to coordinate and execute these initiatives; the training, counseling and monitoring of the parties involved; and the evaluation of the results. The Institute may finance initiatives submitted by other institutions, groups or individuals within the selected priorities.

Three triads define the present health situation in Mexico and Latin America:

  • Three major challenges: the unfinished agenda of infections, malnutrition, and reproductive health problems, emerging diseases and global risks.
  • Three instruments to respond to the challenges: unprecedented technological innovations, greater social awareness of the importance of health, and increased social investment.
  • Three consequences of not acting: reduced competitiveness, loss of human capital and risks to public health.

The purpose of the Carso Health Institute is to contribute to the enhancement of the wellbeing of the population by harnessing the opportunities offered by technological and organizational innovations in confronting the development and health challenges faced by our countries.

The initiatives and projects financed and developed by the Institute are based on six platforms of action:

Investigation and research: discovery of new solutions

Innovation: development of better solutions

Implementation: application of existing solutions

Institutional strengthening: management of solutions

Information, dissemination, evaluation, and analysis of performance: monitoring and sharing solutions

Investment: making solutions viable.

Several specific projects derive from these platforms and translate into the following areas of work:

  • Contribute to closing the social gaps associated with the Millenium Development Goals: AMANECE Program
  • Develop proactive solutions and address the emerging challenges of non-communicable diseases and injuries: Healthy Longevity
  • Strengthen the safety of people and nations in the face of the health risks that result from globalization: Health without Borders
  • Mobilize the communications revolution to promote health: TelSalud
  • Mobilize initiatives to innovate in the organization of health services: Social Enterprises for Health.
  • Mobilize information and knowledge to empower citizens to better protect and care for their health: Observatory and Communication and Education for Health.

The Carso Health Institute, dedicated to the search for and implementation of, solutions, acts at the national, regional and global levels. Its ultimate goal is to broaden the opportunities to live with better health.
